Apartment inspection and repairs

Your new home has been inspected when the previous resident moved out. It is important that you fill in the apartment inspection form right after you have moved in and note in the form any faults or defects you find in the apartment. The property manager’s office will give you the form when you sign your rental agreement. Return the completed form to the property manager’s office. You can discuss any needs for repairs separately with the property manager, the apartment inspection form is not a list of repairs.

Home insurance

Report any changes in your housing situation to your insurance company and make sure your home insurance is valid.

Your house is covered by a full value insurance. However, it does not cover movable property damaged in a fire, property stolen from storage or water damage caused to furniture and other property. However, a home insurance usually does cover the above-mentioned damage. You should take out a home insurance when you move in and make sure in advance that it is valid for the apartment you move into.

Notifications of move

Remember to notify the maintenance company in charge of maintaining your building’s list of residents about your move.

You can submit a Notification of change of address to the post office and/or the Local Register Office with a form provided by them. However, if your rental agreement enters into force during the weekend or other holiday you can move in on the following business day. Please discuss any practical arrangements related to your move with the property manager.

You will need to move out on the date of termination of your rental agreement at the latest. You will be provided instructions for practices related to moving out after you have submitted your notice of termination.

Electricity contract

Before you move in, please contact the property manager to discuss whether you need to sign a separate electricity contract. In the majority of properties, the residents are responsible for signing their own electricity contracts for their apartments. This can be arranged with any electricity company over the telephone.

Storage facilities

If your apartment comes with a storage cage or storage room, please keep it locked. It is the resident’s responsibility to get a lock for their own storage unit. If the previous resident has left their belongings in the storage, ask for instructions from the property manager or maintenance company. According to rescue and safety legislation, property must not be left in passageways.

Apartment buildings often have separate storage for outdoor equipment and prams. Everyone should make sure that doors to storage rooms stay locked. Each resident is responsible for ensuring that their own apartment-specific storage and root cellar unit stays locked. Petrol canisters, gas or other inflammable fluids must not be stored in storage units.
